Gymnasts Set National Stadium Agog

All is now set for the commencement of the second edition of Aliko Dangote Open Gymnastics Championship billed to run from Thursday, April 10 through Sunday, April 13 at the Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

The championship is sponsored by Maritime Agency Limited headed by Foluso Adefemi on behalf of Alhaji Aliko Dangote, for the development of sports in the country.

Secretary General of the Gymnastics Federation of Nigeria (GFN), Opeyemi Aminu said at least 250 gymnasts would be taking part in the championship that is expected to help discover new and hidden talents that would take over from the aging ones.

According to him, at least 18 states of the federation and some clubs would form the bulk of the athletes that would be participating at the championship.

There would be trophies for the first placed teams in the two categories, while medals would be presented to all participants at the end of the championship.

Most of the gymnasts started arriving Lagos since Monday, April 7 for the event while some breezed in yesterday with their officials, setting the stadium arena agog for the five days event.

"This year's edition would be in two categories: the intermediate and senior categories. As you know, there is need to replace some of our aging athletes that have done us proud in the past.

"And in the foregoing, the federation has directed the technical committee to draw out a code of points for the under aged competitions, now that the sport is part of the Nigeria School Sports Federation (NSSF) games as medal winning event.

"This we believe would go a long way to provide opportunity for grassroots development and improve the participation of youths in gymnastics grow in the country", Aminu said.
