Zenith League - Sunshine Burns Dolphins

Sunshine Angels basketball club of Akure Monday pulled off the first upset of the 2008 season in the Zenith Bank Basketball League by beating highly rated Dolphins basketball club of Lagos by 68-61 points.

Dolphins with continental exposure had finished as runners up to First Bank in the last three seasons of the league and is seen by experts as one of the very few teams that can sweep the Elephant Girls from the top.

The Angels of Ondo State were the fifth best team last season.

The proprietor and manager of Dolphins Wale Aboderin said just after the match, played at the Sports Hall of the Abuja National Stadium that his players took the match for granted and paid dearly for that poor attitude.

"The Sunshine girls beat us fair and square: I have given credit to their coach (Andrew Isokpehi) and the players. They really came at us from the blast of the referees' whistle to the buzzer.

"My girls took things for granted; they were not aggressive, simply took things for granted.

As a matter of fact they (Sunshine Angels) lead by 20 points at the first quarter and that explains a lot before we recovered to cut down the lead to just 2 points by the third. But the Sunshine girls were really ready for business.

Our defence was not it and we paid dearly for that.

"But let's see what happens in other games; there's still a long way to go. We still have two phases left before we all sort out the final positions," the former boss of the Lagos State Basketball Association said.

That match of the day was the third at Abuja National Stadium. The first match of the day was between Dodan Amazons and FCT Angels. The Amazons won the Zenith League rookies 60-56.

The previews declared the game to be an open game and it turned out so as it was played at a clutch.

Delta Force drilled Plateau Rocks 70-25 in the second match. That game and result practically went by the bookmakers views.

In the last match of the day First Bank defeated Nigeria Immigration 88-39.
