All Out For Samuel Peter

"We are prepared for the big event and it is going to be a Nigerian night. I assure you we will win and we will celebrate together."

Those words of the Charge d'Affaires at the Nigerian embassy in Mexico, Clement Abuku, captures the expectations of Nigerians, home and abroad, on the WBC Heavyweight title bout between Samuel Peter and Oleg Maskaev, Saturday, March 8, in Cancun, Mexico.

Nigerians are positive that Nigeria born Samuel Peter  will win the day and they are going all out to provide him massive support necessary for  him to bring home the crown.

The Nigerian minister of sports and chairman of the National Sports Commission, Abdulrahman Gimba, has been cleared by President Umar Yar'Adua to lead a powwerful national delegation to  the ring side for Peter. The delegation also includes representatives of the Nigeria Police, Peter's employers, who are proud of the honour and good image the pugilist's exploit has brought to the force. The Inspector General of Police, Mike Okiro, will be represented by his next in command, Ogbonna Onovo. Others from the Police include AIG Olusegun Efuntayo and Rtd AIG Albert Ikenwa who is said to have recruited Peter into the Nigeria Police Force several years ago and seen him grow into a world class athlete.

According to a report from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Peter's home state of Akwa Ibom in Nigeria also has its men  in the Nigerian delegation alongside officials of Nigeria's Boxing Board of Control.

The delegation is calculated to add  to the hundreds of Nigerians who are said to be heading to Cancun  from the USA, Canada and other neighbouring countries and cities of Mexico to not only watch but cheer Peter to victory.

Already, there have been calls from various Nigerian boxing promoters and coaches on Samuel Peter to go all out and bring Maskaev down decisively, to do the country proud. They believe Peter has got a great chance on the night and they trust that his promoter, the legendary Don King, knows and is doing all it takes to inspire  Peter to punch and jab his way though to substantively dorn the WBC Heavyweight champion.ship belt.
