Egypt halts Warriors

Hassan in green was outstanding
Egypt came from behind to beat hard fighting debutants Zimbabwe 2-1 at a packed Sfax stadium in Sousse-second biggest city in Tunisia, to temporarily go atop in Group C.

Zimbabwe depict their debutants status in the first half as terrific saves from 21-year old Zimbabwean goal keeper Energy Murambadoro, first in the 34th minute deny Egypt an early lead.

Veteran star and skipper of the side, Sheffield United’s   Peter Ndlovu showed brilliance in the 42nd minute but his pull outs went unconnected.

The first half was littered with flurry of misses, with Ahmed ‘Mido’ Hossam, Ahmed Hassan, a survivor of the 1998 ANC wining side, the major culprits whilst Tamer also showed good skills but for fantastic goal keeping from Murambadoro denying him a goal on two occasions.

Shocking lead
Debutant Zimbabwe started the second half in an electrifying fashion Peter Ndlovu’s diving header stunned the travelling Egyptian fans, thus putting the warriors into the lead in the 47th minute.

Menacingly, the Sheffield man showed class as another beautiful run from the veteran resulted in him being controversially brought down but the referee booked him for feigning the fall instead.

55th minute saw a terrific reaction safe once again from Zimbabwean goal keeper Murambadoro that kept the scoreline lower and Mido in frustration.

Pressure pays off
Egypt capitalised on a poor clearance, in a goal mouth scramble to level the scores, eleven minutes after the restart through Tamer Abdelhamid's.

Amazingly, with just 15 seconds on the field of play, Muhammed Barakat, made his presence felt, when his first touch- a glancing header was adjudged to have crossed the line by the lines man to put the four times African champions ahead.

Barakat‘s run in the 62nd minute saw Fathi running into the pass but missed target by few inches.

88th minute saw what undoubtedly was the easiest of chances to score wasted by substitute Wilfred Mugeyi, as he riffled his shot blatantly wide.

The pharaoh’s win should creditably go to Ahmed Hassan in midfield and the inspiration play of Hassan Mido.

It was a pity that the Zimbabweans lost the game...I wanted them to win for the man Peter Ndlovu. It was a good career for him after Bruce Grobeller left him to carry Warriors all alone.
