Road Game return for Nigeria league

The Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and club owners of the men's Premier League clubs had a parley last weekend in Abuja, the country capital city and chose March 23 as the start off date for their flagship championship - The Premier League. The league is expected to run through the month of July just as the 2008 Beijing Olympics gets around the corner.

The Technical Director of the Federation Dr. Adamu Ahmed assured the gathering that the detail fixtures will be worked within the next two weeks.

'Having agreed on the date and the exact period matches will hold, working out the fixtures should become much easier and that should be released within the next two weeks,' he said.

By the schedule adopted at the parley, all matches will be played by the weekend - running between Fridays and Sundays in all locations. After the debates on options available for the league format, the teams settled for a single home and away games plus the Road Trips in the regular season.

This will be followed by the play off season. But there was a proviso to the format with the teams agreeing to step up to two home and away games each in the regular season should there be the need when sponsorship is secured for the league.

'If playing the double games will still keep us within the period ending in July or early August then it should be okay otherwise we may have to go with the single games and try the double next season,' Adamu said.

Unlike the past when the regular season games held without any physical presence of security personnel, the teams and the NBBF voted to have security men on ground before any match can be approved by the match commissioner. A minimum of 6 personnel was accepted. The meeting agreed that any club that violates basic security measures will be sanctioned heavily with the possibility of being banished.

When the league starts next month, it will be returning to full season after the abridged type last season.
