Ghana 2008 ACN kicks off in grand style
The 26th MTN Africa Cup of Nations, Ghana 2008 kicked off with a colourful opening ceremony at the Ohene Djan Sports Stadium in Accra on Sunday.
The over 40,000 Spectators at the stadium all dressed in Ghana colours watched as performers brought to the world the finest aspects of the Ghanaian culture.
The choreographic display was fascinating with massive colour shapes and patterns, accompanied by loud drums. The highlight of the ceremony was a helicopter waving the flag of Ghana in the air coupled with series of fireworks. The colourful display of the 2500 performers mobilized for the purpose was watched amongst others by the President of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor, CAF President Issa Hayatou, FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter and UEFA President Michel Platini. President Kufuor called on Africa to unite as he welcomed the visitors to the West African Nation for the continent's biggest soccer fiesta, envisaged to be the best ever. ''May the tournament further unite Africa, even as the best sixteen teams compete for the winner's trophy.’’? He said that his government has spent a lot of money to build and renovate the four stadia and other facilities, adding that his country was proud to host the event. CAF President Issa Hayatou hoped that the tournament was going to be great and praised Ghana for the organization structures towards hosting the continent's greatest soccer showpiece. The ceremony presided the opening game of the competition the pitted hosts Ghana against Guinea. Over 4.5 billion viewers across the world watched the opening ceremony. 0
