Cote d’Ivoire goes down fighting

The young ladies from Cote d’Ivoire gave a good account of themselves in the first quarter-final match against Angola Friday at the Marius Ndiaye gymnasium, Dakar, Senegal in the 20th Africa Nations Championship for Women.

The Ivorian who went down in the first quarter 16-07 points came back fighting hard in the second quarter with an impressive win of 12-08 points they maintain the form in the third quarter which the quarter ending 11 points apiece, their last minute efforts in the fourth and deciding quarter was not good enough to give them victory losing by just two points margin of 44-42 points.

The inability of the Ivorian to manage success was their greatest undoing, they however received standing ovation from the fans who appreciated their young efforts.

Angola guard, Maria Afonso led the floor with 17 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists while her teammate, Nacessela Mauricio grabbed 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

17 year-old Cote d’Ivoire guard, Kani Kouyate poured in 13 points and 4 rebounds, the trio of Awa Kone, Djedjemei Edjime and Minata Fofana grabbed 5 rebounds each.

Mali overruns Cameroon 72-41 to move to last-4

Spurred on by Houston Comets Star, Hamchetou Maiga, Mali Friday handed down a comprehensive defeat to Cameroon in the second quarter-finals match of the 20th Africa Nations Championship for Women by 72-41 points.

Starting the match on a more cautious note, 29 year-old Maiga provided the tonic the coach Jose Ruiz Malian side needed to raise a 13 points lead at halftime (11-08, 20-10) and continue the dominance in the third quarter with only Cameroon’s Israeli-base Alvine Bella Mendeng and guard Priscilla Mbiandja showing some promises of a side that want to contest for honours.

Backed with a bench that knows what it wanted the Malian continued the foray with a 25-10 points win in the third quarter before rounding off the match with a fourth quarter win of 16-13 points.

Malian centre, Nagnouma Coulibaly had a double double of 14 points, 10 rebounds and one block-shot, enterprising Maiga poured in 13 points, 4 assists and 2 rebounds, Nare Diawara contributed 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists while Fatoumata Bagayoko 10 points, 6 assists and 2 rebounds. Mbiandja was the only Cameroon player that recorded a double score of 11 points.
