We are happy to host Africa, FSBB President

Alioune Badara Diagne, president of the Senegal Basketball Federation (FSBB) says the people and government of Senegal are happy to host the whole of Africa in the 20th Africa Nations Championship for Women. to be played from 20th to 30th September in Dakar and Thies.

Diagne who refused to comment on the performance of his country national team saying it's the job of the coaching crew to make such comment, thanked the participating countries and the continental ruling body, FIBA Africa for showing understanding with the host in the early part of the championship.

The FSBB President believed there is tremendous improvement in the areas of transportation and accommodation, which he said was in short supply at the start of the weeklong championship.

The FSBB boss who was came into office in February 2005 told www.fiba-afrique.org that his aspiration for vying for the presidency of FSBB is to see that Senegalese basketball moved up higher.

The FSBB President said the Senegalese federation is working hard to raise the levels of women basketball to an appreciable level where they can compete with top women basketball playing nations.

He described his country men's team performance in Angola during the August 2007 Men Championship as a disaster, he said it was a costly mistake to hire a coach who is not available.

“It is a thing of joy to host the rest of the continent and we want to appreciate them for showing some sense of belonging and understanding at the beginning of the championship when certain things were in short supply.

“I will leave the issue of assessing the team to the coaches because that is their job and we as federation can only support their efforts at securing a good results for the people and government of Senegal who stood behind us in the staging of the biggest women basketball championship in Africa.

“On our men team outing in Angola this year, I will say it was a disastrous outing and the federation is evaluating the whole situation with a view of coming up with a positive plans that see our basketball moving up.

“I know if things work well, we like Nigeria and Angola have what it takes to be a major force in world men basketball and I must use this opportunity to congratulate Angola and Nigeria for doing Africa proud at the 2006 FIBA World Championship in Japan.
