Kenya storm Senegal with local players
Kenya women national will depart Nairobi Monday for Senegal ahead the 20th FIBA Africa Championship for Women with largely home base players.
www.fiba-africa.com exclusively gathered at the weekend that the East African foreign-based would not be available for the African Championship due to studies engagement among other pressing issues. According to the Chairman of the Kenya Basketball Federation (KBF), Agina Wesonga that only local based players will don national colours in the Dakar festival that will tip-off on Friday. He said that the final squad would be named today, (Monday) hours before the team jets out for the West African nation. "We are waiting for the players who were in the regional tournament in Kigali to return so that the coaches will be able to assess them before naming the final 12." Agina said. The overseas-based players who were at the All Africa Games in Algeria, Josephine Owino, Lorraine Odhiambo, Rose Ouma and Marion Githegi are unavailable due to studies engagements. Kenya last participated in the continental show in 1997 in Nairobi where they finished fourth and its exactly ten years down the line now. Incidentally the last time Kenya took part of the African Championship away from home was in Dakar, Senegal in 1992 where they defied the odds to take the silver behind the home team. This feat earned the team a slot in the FIBA World Championships in Adelaide Australia in 1994. The Kenyan federation chairman thanked the government and the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC) for making the trip a reality.
