Senegal '07 - Cameroon risk suspension
Africa basketball ruling body, FIBA Africa may come down heavily on Cameroon should its senior female national team fail to honour the 20th edition of the African Women Championship in Senegal.
Investigation from Yaounde, capital of Cameroon indicates that the national team who are yet to commence preparation due to lack of support from the government may stay away from the championship which begin on September 21. www.fiba-africa.com reliable source in the Central Africa country says the federation is yet to come up with the list of players that will fly the country flag in Senegal but have named Angouan'd John and Mme Wanko Elizabeth as head and assistant coaches respectively. "We don't know what will happen to our team as nothing is on ground to show that the federation is planning anything, no thanks to the lack of support from the government whose responsibility it is to make fund available for the federation", added the source. "The country federation is also aware of the risk of being in Senegal as this may have adverse effect on our men team taking part in the Beijing 2008 Olympics qualifiers and our clubs taking part in any FIBA Africa organised championship for some years and we could only hope that the government act fast to save the situation", he concluded. The penalty for pulling out of a championship at the last minute by any country/team is severe which might include monetary fine and many years of suspension. 0
