SuperSport, the World of Champions light up the screens, with the best of football action, as the FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off next Monday in China.
Sixteen nations of the world including Africa champion, Nigeria will be competing in this year’s top spot in China, having saved its automatic entry, sees the remaining fifteen berths, being divided amongst the six FIFA confederations, with at least one going to each. The championship will see Nigeria’s Super Falcons pitched against Sweden. The Nigerian female side, who, in November last year retianed the Africa title for a record fifth time, keeping up their monopoly of the continental game, however, they have been unable to translate that dominance into success at the FIFA Women’s World Cup or the Olympic Women’s Football Tournament. Majority of the Nigerian squad at the 2003 championship is likely to return for the 2007 tournament in china. Football lovers can be sure of seeing Nigeria’s own, Mercy Akide and Florence Omagbemi, who played in the first ever FIFA Women’s World Cup in 1991 and the latest entry into the Super Falcons squad, Cynthia Uwak, recently named as one of the three contenders of the 2006 CAF women’s Football of the Year award and Perpetual Nkwocha last Year’s winner. Nigeria is pitched against one of the best sides in international women’s football competition, Sweden, who unarguably are a strong side. With a number of promising newcomers, among them are Maria Aronsson, Marlene Sjoberg and elin Ekblom. Nigeria is set to battle Sweden to finish, come September 11th. Other nations in the championship include, United States, who will be up against Korea Republic, we’ll also see Japan going up against England. Will the Falcons exceed the quarter final stage? Only time will tell as this tournament promises to be exciting. As always, SuperSport pledges its continued efforts to give to its subscribers, the best of football action.
