Afrobasket '07 - Angola retain title

Angola have won the FIBA Africa Championship title for a record five times back-back and nine in the last ten editions of the championship thus booking an automatic ticket to the 2008 Beijing Olympics beating hard fighting Cameroon by 86-72 points in the grand finale after 11 days of action.

Though the young Cameroon team lost to the Angolan in the epic final they still held their head high especially when nobody gave them chance to go far in the championship with some of the continent’s basketball power house like Nigeria, Senegal and Mali bowing out at the group and quarter-final stage.

Eduardo Mingas was the in a star-performance against the Cameroon side scoring 18 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists, the duo of Miguel Lutonda and Joaquim Gomes scored 13 points each with Gomes grabbing 5 rebounds, Victor Muzadi poured in 12 points, 3 rebounds and one assist while Carlos Morais added 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Cameroon forward, Brice Vounang like Mingas scored 18 points but with 10 rebounds and one block-shot, Patrick Bouli added 16 points and 2 assists just as Gaston Essengue held up the Lions pride with 14 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists.

As runner-up Cameroon will be joined by third-placed Cape Verde for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games playoffs slated for next year.
