I'm in Lagos to win, declares Offiom Edem

9th All Africa Games gold medallist in the double and team event, Offiom Edem says her acceptance to be part of the 1st Procold/Orange Drug Lagos Open Table Tennis Championship was not for sight seeing.

The Calabar-born ping ponger says she is top form and does not see anyone stopping her from winning the coveted prize in the Women Singles event.

Speaking to a cross section of the media Wednesday at the University of Lagos Sports Centre, venue of the four-day championship, Edem who will be turning professional with a division-two club side in Portugal believed that her present form would help her win the Procold Open.

The Nigeria Number-one ranked player in the women category believed it will be difficult for Nigeria to rode rough-shod over other African countries in the game except something urgent is done to arrest the dwindling fortune of the game that is once pride as Nigeria birth-right in Africa.

She challenged the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation and other state association to be up and doing so that younger players could be encouraged to continue with the sport and take over conveniently from aging players such as Segun Toriola, Monday Merotoun, Hassan Kazeem, Bose Kaffo and Funke Oshonaike whom she gave tribute to for doing their best for the game in Nigeria.

The Calabar-based ping-pong queen says hard work is her secret to success and implores her contemporaries to take their training schedule seriously.
