Commonwealth Games Men's Singles gold medal defending, Segun Toriola is the centre of attraction at the 1st Procold/Orange Drugs Lagos Open Table Tennis Championship which stroke off Wednesday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the University of Lagos Sports Centre, Akoka.
Toriola who represented Nigeria at the just concluded 9th All Africa games held in Algiers, Algeria defeated his first round opponent Kehinde Oladele in 3 sets to one of 11-4; 11-5; 8-11 and 11-3. Speaking shortly after the encounter, number-one ranked table tennis player in the whole of Africa says his presence in the four-day championship is to serve as encouragement to the younger players whom he advised to remain focus in their chosen career. The Commonwealth top ping ponger congratulate the organizers of the event, Lagos State Table Tennis Association and the sponsor Orange Drugs Limited marketer of Procold the title product for the championship for putting together such a laudable championship that attracted top players from across the country. He, however, decried the dwindling fortune of the sport once regarded as Nigeria's birthright in Africa. He sounded a note of warning while congratulating the nation table tennis team to the 9th All Africa Games in Algiers for winning four out of the seven gold medals at stake. Toriola said though the country managed to win four gold medals in Algiers it does not mean the Nigerian team did not try its best as the country's perennial rival in the game, Egypt could only manage to win just one gold while Congo DRC picked the remaining two gold medals. 0
