Swimming: Nigeria not good enough for Olympics

Director of sports development, Patrick Ekeji has ruled out the chances of Nigerian swimmers against their counterparts from other parts of the world, at the forth coming Athens 2004, Olympic Games.

Speaking with www.nigeriasports.com in Abuja, Ekeji said that, the impressive performance of our swimmers at the All Africa games coupled with another golden outing at the Afro-Asian games is not enough criteria for including Swimming as one of the events in which the country will feature at the Olympics.

Stressing that the Olympics is a different ball game from all other competitions, with the stakes higher and the best swimmers in the world on parade against whom our swimmers stand no chance, going by their timing and personal best at the All Africa games and subsequent competitions.

“In line with the decision to take only athletes that broke the existing African record in their event at the all Africa games to the Olympics, swimming will not be part of the Olympic Games for Nigeria as none of our swimmers achieved that feat” Patrick Ekeji said.

A step backward

The revelations by Ekeji may have a negative effect on the development of the sport in the country after the performance of swimmers like Obia Inyingiyikabo at the All Africa games and Afro-Asian games was expected to a be a spring board that will launch swimming into greater heights.

Thou shall not condemn cause if the swimmers were brought up in a nice way, they can make it anywhere. It's not always about winning, it's about trying. Let them expose the swimmers to the international world of swimming and from their, they get more experience about swimming.

That is no escuise, because if the federation have the love of this country and the athlete in mind they would have been expose enough to face any tough opposition in the world.

Nigeria seriously needs to consider the way it treats its' swimmers. I know several previous swimmers from there and one current swimmer, and if it weren't for the disregard Nigeria has for swimming, all of these athletes would be capable of making it to the Olympics. The training and equipment are substandard, as are many other things I will not mention. The swimmers are there to compete, which they happen to love very much, but they can't do it all. The coaches are there for a reason. There is no logical reason why Nigeria can't be present at the Olympic games. Give them a chance. ~ Someone is U.S.

The coaches need to look seriously at their methods, and the government needs to quit pushing swimming as a sport to the bottom of their priority list.
