Triathlon Gets Root In Nigeria
The nation's sports associations increased yesterday when the board of Nigeria Triathlon Union (NTU) unveiled the new association's members to the public at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), National Stadium, Lagos. Speaking at the occasion, president of the union, Dr.Lanre Glover, said the association may be new to Nigerians, but stressed that it is well-known all over the world.
He explained that the sport, which will see an athlete competing in swimming, cycling and athletics to determine the winner, is an endurance sport. According to Glover, triathlon is a sport recognised by the Commonwealth and Olympics games.
The union, according to him, is coming out with a bang and membership will be nationwide, while state affiliations to the national body (NTU) will pay certain fees to become members.
He disclosed that the NTU is already a recognised
member of the continential body of the union in
Africa, adding that NTU was formed in Nigeria last
November and joined the International Triathlon Union (ITU) in February this year.
He added that the union will host its first
competition in August this year.
