Top Seeds Cruise On At CBN Open

Top seeds players in the ongoing Central Bank of Nigeria tennis championship showed class as they all qualified for the second round on Tuesday. First among the prominent players that sailed into the second round are Nigeria’ s Davis Cup player Abdulmumini Babalola who defeated Olaniyi Ibiwoye 6/0 6/0.
Babalola told Sporting Mirror after the victory that he is focused towards retaining his crown as he would not underestimate any opposition.
Other second round qualifiers are Albert Bukom who defeated Michael Anthony in the rubber at 6/4 2/6 6/2, Destiny Dasilva who beat Chinedu Udorzoh 6/3 6/3, Federick Omuta who subdued Sunday Olufemi 6/4 6/3 and Sunday Igbinovia who recorded a 2-1 victory over Michael Igoche at 6/3 6/7 6/2.
The story was the same in the Ladies category where number one seed, Omotayo Ibrahim took Lilian Amadin to the cleaners at 6/1 6/1 while defending champion, Margareth Olagundoye halted Abiodun Oyegoke at 6/3 6/2.
Former national number one player Osaro Amadin who staged a come back to the sport made a mince meat of Ngozi Dirisu who did not win a single game in the duel.
Other female qualifiers are Hannah Eke, Deborah Gbadamosi and daughter of ace tennis coach, Godwin Kienka, Loila.
Actions continue in the third round on Wednesday with some of the female matches holding at the Nigeria Ports Authority (NPA) ground on Bode Thomas Street.
The match was taken to NPA ground because of the large number of matches in the tournament such as the Doubles event and Mixed Double.
Some heavy down pour in the last two days also slowed down the programme of activities.
