The kienka family
The maiden edition of the Central Bank Junior Tennis Championship ended on a very high note with the Kienka's sweeping all three titles in their age categories.

Tthey were followed by the Kwange's from Niger State who won two titles.
Tamina Kienka, 12, of Kings College, Lagos started the victory run for the Kienkas when he beat Chibuzor Nweje 9-3 in the boys 12 finals.

Lolia Kienka then followed with an equally emphatic 9-3 win over Kelechi Njoku while Kalada Kienka rapped up the sweep with a very entertaining power game that saw off Peter Stephen from the Co-Foundation Academy Kaduna 9-5. Lolia and Kalada are expected to get wild cards into the senior event next week.

The Kwange's also ran off with victories in the girls' 12 and the boys' 10. Rebecca Kwange 11, beat Abuja-based Serbian Katarina Alex 9-5 to take the girls' 12 trophy while younger brother, Shedrack Kwange edged Friday Nsikak of Lagos 9-7 in a match of fluctuating fortunes.

The most outstanding player trophy for boys went to Tamina Kienka who played up in the 14s and beat the number two seed Anthony Leo from the Co-Foundatin to  reach the semis. The most outstanding girl was Gemma Odiase who lost 9-0 in the round robin of the girls 10 to number one seed Evelyn Ahen. She found her way to the finals and then made a dramatic recovery almost taking the match by leading 6-3 against the favourite, Evelyn.

Godwin Kienka, director of the International Tennis Academy said the CBN Junior championship like other tournaments in the ITA/NNPC circuit was "a very satisfying one." Adding, " when you give the juniors good accommodation, feed them well and restring their rackets free of charge, they have nothing to worry about and the standard is bound to be high.

The standard keeps getting higher and higher and its only amatter of time before we have a national champion under the age of 18 and good professionals at the right age." Ninety six players from different parts of the country took part in the championship which is aimed at establishing a link between junior and senior tournaments  thereby helping the junior players make the transition to the senior cadre at an earlier age.

The tournament was run under the auspices of the NNPC Junior Circuit which has a nationwide ranking of players in the four age groups. The next junior tournament according to the ITA will be the International Energy Insurance Championship scheduled for Port Harcourt about the end of June. That will be followed by the NNPC junior tournaments in the north and south of the country.
