IEIC takes Its Tennis Sponsorship to the National

Insurance giants, International Energy Insurance Company (IEIC) has committed to sponsoring an annual junior tennis championship to be run by the International Tennis Academy as part of the ITA/NNPC Junior Tennis Circuit. The insurance company, one of the leaders in Oil services, marine and general insurance in Africa, sponsors a very popular senior tournament at the elite Ikoyi Club in Lagos.

The executive vice chairman of the IEIC, Mr Ifie Sekibo, said while committing to the sponsorship, that the company decided to add the junior event to be hosted by the Port Harcourt club, to attract, identify and develop junior talents in the Niger Delta in particular and in the country in general.

The tournament which will feature the usual four categories  10, 12, 14, and 16s  of the ITA/NNPC Circuit has been scheduled to come up during the Easter holidays following the African Junior Championship in Botswana.

Godwin Kienka, director of the ITA said arrangements have been concluded with the Port Harcourt club and plans were afoot to ensure that when players come down south from the North or go up North from the south they play two weeks of tournaments the same way as the International tennis Federation schedules its tournaments.   "That should make them play a lot of matches and prepare them for life on the professional circuit. More importantly, they make fewer trips across the country" Kienka said.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank has also joined the junior train by approving the sponsorship of a Central Bank Junior Tennis Championship to precede the senior event which the bank has sponsored since the 70s. The junior tournament is expected to serve as a feeder to the senior event with winners in the 16s getting a wild card from the Nigeria Tennis Federation to compete in the senior event.

According to Kienka, "this should really fast track the development process."
The chairman of the Nigeria Tennis Federation who had recently returned from an ITF technical committee meeting in China, described the addition of the two tournaments to the Nigerian tennis calendar as a good development. "We shall do our best to ensure that other senior tournaments like the Dala Hard Court in Kano an the Ogbe Hard Court in Benin City create junior versions," he added.
The Central Bank Junior Championship to be held in Lagos is expected to hold last week of April.
