Vogts Picks Hassler as Assistant

New Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Berti Vogts has added ex-German international, Thomas Hassler to his long list of assistants as he braces up to resume work in Nigeria by first week of March, NigeriaSports.com reports.

Nigeriasports.com learnt that Vogts (60) sounded up Hassler for the assistant position in the Super Eagles’ coaching crew at Hassler’s present job as a youth team coach in FC Cologne. And the 40-year coach who retired from football as a player in 2005 and earned his coaching certificate only last year jumped at the offer with the FC Cologne officials accepting to release him.

At the round table where the deal was reached with FC Cologne Manager, Christoph Daum in attendance, it was agreed that Hassler will retain his position in the German club while assisting Vogts in Nigeria.

The fee was not disclosed, but the parties agreed that Hassler will be assisting Vogts only during international games involving Nigeria while occasionally flying back to Germany to keep an eye on his youth team.

“Thomas will enjoy a world-wide acclaim in Africa. As an ex-player of a repute who is still learning his ropes in coaching business at FC Cologne, the Nigerian experience will do him good internationally.  I am happy that (Cologne Manager), Daum agreed to release him,” Vogts reacted.

The newly acquired Nigerian handler already has in his crew a foreign goalkeeper trainer – Uli Stein. Thomas Hassler, a midfielder who was in the German team that won the 1990 World Cup was born on May 30, 1966 in West Berlin. He played for FC Cologne, Juventus, AS Roma, Karlsruher SC, Borussia Dortmund, 1860 Munich  and SV Salzburg.
