Nigeria in 8 goals thriller

The Nigeria female U-20 team, the falconets Wednesday made good their intention of redeeming their image with an 8-0 thrashing of helpless Finland in the ongoing Female FIFA U-20 world cup.

After the opening day victory against Canada 3-2, the Falconets seemed to have fallen from the sublime to the ridiculous with a 0-3 loss to China in the second game but the outcome of the match against Finland, a joint championship record with the German 9-1 annihilation of Mexico some days ago has all but proven that the girls are no pretenders.

Spurred on by the arrival of the Nigeria football association secretary general, Fanny Amun from Nigeria and the ever presence of the countrys' sports minister, Bala Kaoje, the Nigerian girls seized the initiative from the 7th minute with a perfect strike from Sabi Akudo and from then never looked back.

Three goals from Maureen Eke, two from Rita Chikwelu, Sabi Akudo and one from Cynthia Uwak all but made the game looked like a practice match.

The Nigerian team is to meet Brazil in the quater-final of the championship next weekend.

"My team exhibited a lot of discipline which I talked about in the last game and as you know, no two games can be the same in football, so we are going back to fashion a winning strategy for the next game", added a very happy Emmanuel Tetteh Okonkwo, the Falconets chief coach.

China playing simultaneously, also ended the hopes of Canada with a 1-0 victory courtesy of tournament revelation, Ma Xiaoxu.

Cynthia Uwak was named the player of the match, her second in the championship so far.

Opatola Adewole, Moscow, Russia.
