The countdown to the prestigious Yola annual Polo
Tournament got underway with the luanching of an
ambitious sponsorship drive aimed at making the
fiestival the biggest in years.
In the last two weeks, corporate organisations and
individuals have been contacted through letters
carrying the official seal of the Lamido Adamawa, His
Royal Highness Dr. Aliyu Mustafa, the Grand Patron of
Yola Polo Club.
The drive is intentionally penetrating, as the club is
pulling every stop to host the event which would mark
the 82nd anniversary of the introduction of polo in
the Adamawa Kingdom where back in 1930s.
Yola Polo Club Secretary, Alhaji Zukhalaini Mohammed ,
who disclosed this on phone said the royal backing by
the Lamido has greatly lifted the profile of the
festival which has for years remained the biggest
sporting event in the Adamawa Kingdom.
"All the traditional and prospective sponsors of the
tournament have been formally notified about scope of
the tournament this year and we are counting on their
usual support." he pointed out.
Revered as the most prestigious polo event in the
north eastern party of the country, the Yola polo
tournament has continue to grow by leaps, attracting
the biggest teams from across the country.
Last year, over twenty top polo teams from across the
country, battled for top honours during the weeklong
Yola polo extravaganza which was hoted by the Vice
President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.
Teams came from such far flung places like Port
Harcourt, Lagos, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Jos and Bauchi
for the galopping showdown. Expectedly, thousands of
tourists and polo buffs from around the country and
beyond trooped into the Lamido Polo Ground, to witness
the glamorous event.
The Yola polo festival is traditionally backed by
corporate organisations like Abti Group, Intels
Nigeria Limited, Adamawa State Government,
Wema Bank, Adamawa Emirate Council, Upper BenueBasin
Authority, Federal University of Technology, Yola, Gal
Bose Clinic, Ragai Limited, Friendship Guest House,
Yola and Pneusite Associates among others.
Supports have also been coming from distinguished
individuals like Alhaji Dahiru Bobbo- Dan Madami
Adamawa, Alhaji M.C. Dahiru, Alhaji Abubakar Kari,
Alhaji Sani Ribadu, Alhaji Abubakar Jijjwa, Alhaji
Salihu Malkwoi among others.
Major prizes at stake during the event include the
Governor's Cup, which is the tournament's biggest
prize, the Lamido Cup, which is the medium-goal and
the most competitive prize, the Admiral Nyako's Cup
and Intels Cup.The last two are low-goals cups.
There are selected trophies like Abti Cup, General
Hassan Cup, A.A.Mustafa Cup M.C. Tahir Cup and The
Yola South Local Government Cup, that are also up for
grabs in Yola.
