GLOBACOM out-smashes Tennis Federation

Nigeria Tennis Federation's attempt to cajole telecommunications giants, Globacom into bankrolling one of their major anual tournaments, has rammed into a brick wall.

The tournament, was recently dumped by the sponsors, Heineken in preference to financially backing the UEFA soccer tournament in Europe following unpleasant score cards returned to the sponsors after each tournament.

Soon after this sad development, the Tennis Federation in a press release signed by their Secretary, Mr. Opeyemi Aminu informed the media that, Globacom Communications had decided to take over sponsorship of the event...thus assuring that the programme would continue without any hiccup, but under different banner.

However, nigeriasports.com investigations have revealed that, the big communications outfit had not given its nod before the Tennis Federation went to town with the story.

Further probing into the so-called deal revealed that, Globacom was from the on-set not interested in the programme and did not give the Tennis Federation's proposal a second look.

We gathered that, Opeyemi's press release claiming that GlobaCom had accepted, "was a crude way of cajolling and pre-empting the communications outfit into accepting such request.

"There was no time we agreed to sponsor any tennis programme.  It was therefore embarassing to read of such on the pages of some newspapers in the country.

"Our budget has no such thing as a provision for the sponsorship of a tennis tournament for now and we were massively embarrassed by the  Federation's claims.

"We know what we are responsible for right now and tennis is not one of them and such attempt to cajole us into doing what we did and have not planned for, is a thorough miscalculation," we were hinted.
