Nigerian soccer fans, pundits goof

Italian capt. with the World Cup
Nigerians soccer followers joined some milliions others across the globe, most especially, the French, who voted that Les Blues would lifte the 2006 Fifa World Cup trophy. According to nigeriasports.com polls, 52.54 per cent voted for the French team, while 42.37 per cent voted for the Italians, who eventually won the title.

However, a meagre 5.08 per cent voted that the victory could go either way.  In his comment, one of those who voted for the Azurris, Toyosi Ejiagbe said: "This message is from me, TOYOSI EJIAGBE; the winner of the World Cup Final is going to be Italy so I voted for them," he said emphatically.

In an excruciating final played in Berlin, Germany last Sunday, the Italians, after forcing the Bleus to a 1-1 draw in the regulation and extra times,  rode on the back of mother luck of penalty shoot-outs to emerge victorious...thus having their name scribbled on the scroll of times as the only nation on this planet that has won the global gold cup four times after Brazil, that has done it five times!

Days and even seconds before the referee sounded his whistle to signal the beginning of jostling for the lofty title, soccer pundits the world over had thumbed up France to turn on the heat against their Italian opponents.  But whatever, the end justified the means and they all - those French fanatics, who had staked in favour of Les Blues, including their Nigerian counterparts, foofed.
