Henry's goal against Brazil raises golden hope

Thierry Henry’s right-footed volley not only booked France’s place in the semi-finals of Germany 2006, it also gave the Arsenal striker two more bites of the cherry to add to his current tally of three in this edition of the FIFA World Cup™.

According to fifa worldcup.com while it is true that this strike was one of the most important goals in Henry’s career to date, it was also one of the simplest. Left completely unmarked at the far post, he side-footed Zinedine Zidane’s beautifully floated free-kick past Dida to set up a mouthwatering semi-final tie with Portugal in Munich on Wednesday,  July 5.

France’s No.12 had previously found the target both in the 1-1 draw with Korea Republic and the team’s hard-fought 2-0 win over Togo.

Injuries and suspensions aside, Henry will be available to contest the semi-final and a Final or the match for third place. Those valuable minutes on the pitch will give him a great opportunity to close the gap on the current leader, Miroslav Klose, who heads the scoring charts with five goals.

The German striker, however, will have the same chance afforded to him, so the race for the coveted title will go right down to the wire.

Henry’s goal also ensured that the FIFA World Cup’s leading goalscorer, Ronaldo will not be adding to his legend. The Brazilian striker, who overtook Gerd Muller’s total of 14 goals in the Round of 16 match with Ghana, will be heading for home following his side’s exit.

Despite the obvious disappointment of losing their crown, Ronaldo should be justifiably proud of his efforts in this tournament. Although the adidas Golden Shoe Award will not be his this time, his contribution to Germany 2006 and his history-making goal will not be forgotten.

In lasyt Sunday's other quarter-final tie in Gelsenkirchen, the match between England and Portugal provided plenty of drama, but sadly no goals.

So, with only four teams remaining in Germany 2006, all eyes will be on Klose, Henry, Luca Toni, Lukas Podolski and Pauleta as the ‘Road to Gold’ nears its conclusion.
