Rivers Athletes fault Odili on reception

Rivers State born athletes who represented Nigeria at the 8th All Africa Games are agitating over what they perceive to be favouritism on the part of the Rivers State Governor, Peter Odili.

The bone of contention is the largesse given to swimmer Obia Inyengiyikabo by the governor after her record breaking feat at the All Africa Games in Abuja and Afro Asian Games in India.

For winning Nigeria’s first ever swimming medal at the games, and grabbing two gold and one bronze at the Afro-Asian games in India, Obia “Fish” Inyingiyikabo received a brand new BMW five series car plus the sum of one million naira ($6,896) from the governor, a development that did not go down well with the other Rivers State born athletes.

“Obia was not the only Rivers State indigene who represented Nigeria at these two events and she was not the only medallist either.” An athlete told www.nigeriasports.com on the condition of anonymity.

According to him, Tammy Aturidibo won silver in the 100 m  at the Afro Asian Games and was  part of the 4 x 100m relay team at the 8th All Africa Games and Christian Odogu was also a silver medallist with the Volley ball team.

He also mentioned another swimmer; Eric Williams who won silver medal at the Afro Asian Games, even setting a new National record in the process.
