Golf body approves Delta for Presidential teeing
Big-hearted, Delta State has gotten provisional approval of the Nigeria Golf Federation to host the 2006 President Open championship from November 1 to 12 in Asaba, revealed chairman of the organizing committee for the tournament, HRM Alfred Diete-Spiff, in Lagos.
Interestingly the most glamorous and prestigious golf championship in Nigeria, the high standard Ibori golf and country club is where all the gladiators would do battle this year. He disclosed that the President Open, which was last held in 2001 in the Kwara state capital city of Ilorin, has had to suffer multiple postponements due to lack of sponsorship. The president cup this year will be preceded by a 3-day golf clinic organized for children between the ages of 12 to 18 years, just as all the participants in the kiddies category will be drawn from schools in all the local government areas of host Delta state. It is the belief of the Nigeria Golf Federation top-shot that the junior clinic is expected to grow in scope and stature over the next few months with participation across the entire country. Besides, high profile professionals will be on ground to conduct the clinic with a well designed programme to be supervised by the technical committee of the NGF. With a whopping sum of N5 million up for grabs for the 76 professionals, a total of 300 amateur golfers consisting of men and ladies in different categories will be eligible to participate, as amateur players guests and veterans would play for days in 36 holes. HRM Diete-Spiff opined that players may be invited from countries in the Supreme Council For Sports in Africa Zone 3 golf confederations, as part of efforts to make participation in the President Open as wide as possible. Other activities lined up for the event are; cultural displays, bands and participants’ tour of Delta State’s various tourist centres. .FRIDAY EROMOSELE 0
