Williams revives squash with mother’s memorial

Squash rackets, a sport which has been in limbo in the past two years without any big event returns to life on June 21. Thanks to the intervention of FRA Williams Jnr. who is bankrolling a tournament tagged ‘Beatrice Oladunni Williams Memorial under 19 National Squash Championship’ in memory of his late mother.

The event which is staging a comeback has been part of the squash programme for almost a decade starting off as a tournament to commemorate the birthday of the legal luminary, late FRA Williams while he was alive.

It became a memorial tournament after the death of the sponsor’s mother. In the last three years, the tournament has not been played. The sponsor however decided to revive it this year. Over one hundred players will vie for cash and honours in this tournament which will last three days.

Secretary General of the Nigeria Squash Rackets Federation, Mr. Akawo Amechi told nigeriasports.com at the National Stadium, Surulere that the tournament was a sign of greater days ahead for the sport.

‘I have always had great dream for squash. In fact I have always known squash to be a big sport even though along the way the sport encountered some problems and did not have major events.

Now, the sport is on course to its rightful position in the hierarchy of Nigerian sports at the top’ Amechi said.  The secretary said a lot of prizes were on offer from cash to replicas and certificates for deserving players.
