Fire Guts Port Harcourt Club

On tuesday afternoon, fire gutted the Port Harcourt Club building along forces Avenue Old GRA Port Harcourt, destroying property worth millions of Naira.

www.nigeriasports.com investigations show that the fire, which began at about 1.00pm on Tuesday,  may have been as a result of an electrical fault, which emanated from the scrabble section.

The areas mainly affected include the billiards and snooker section, the bar amongst others.

Efforts by the staff of the club to tackle the inferno proved abortive following the insufficient amount of fire extinguishers.

However, nine fire service tankers from the Nigeria Ports Authority, Shell, Agip, Totalfina Elf and the State fire Service finally put out the fire.

www.nigeriasports.com later caught up with the Club President, Henry Odili who expressed shock of the inferno

“I was in my office with the vice president and other committee members when we heard shouts coming from outside and we ran out only to see fire from the scrabble section. Usually you don’t have people in the scrabble section at that time of the day so we cant exactly say what started the fire.”

He said a large part of the building was severely damaged by the fire.

On his part the Club Manager, Obilson Yegowei disclosed that despite the effort of men of fire service a good number of items were lost.
