Falcons get full house

On Tuesday morning, thirty Falcons players sweated it out at the Liberty Stadium training pitch as the team continued its build up for the Athens 2004 Olympic Qualifying match against the Black Queens of Ghana.

Latest arrivals are Bayelsa Queens midfielder, Maureen Eke, keeper Precious Dede of Delta Queens and Rivers Angels, Martha Abara.

Late on Monday, Rita Nwadike, Stella Mbachu, Titi Mekuleyi and Ann Chiejine swelled the number to thirty.

Assistant coach of the team, Joy Etim told www.nigeriasports.com that they are in a sieving process and a lot of players will be dropped soon so the team can concentrate on tactics.

“Besides, there is nothing wrong with the camp and the story about mosquitoes is not just false, it is also misleading.”

Joy Etim said the only “problem” they have is the large number of players but that will be sorted out in a fortnight.

All Africa Games Gold medal winning goalkeeper, Oge Onyinaya told www.nigeriasports.com that the battle for shirts will be a keenly contested one but that would not be the focus for now.

“We are all here to win, so while we choose to do our best we are working together and anybody who gets the nod will be supported by the rest of the team.”

Former number one goalkeeper, Ann Chiejine said the important thing is to survive the screening process that may see about twenty players dropped in the next ten days.

“Nobody is talking about the match for now because the key thing is to be among the final twenty five that will form the bed rock of the team.”

Ifeanyi Chiejine has not yet joined the team, but she called www.nigeriasports.com from her base in Lagos to say the Falcons must tread with caution.

“There is so much talk about Alberta Sackey’s absence from the Ghanian team. Sackey is just one player and I think the Ghanian team will still be a threat, whether Sackey plays or not.”

Chief Coach, Ismaila Mabo is taking the match so seriously he has warned all foreign-based players to show up in camp before Sunday or forget the match.

All thirty-nine home based players with the exception of Pepetua Nkwocha who will arrive on Wednesday are already in Ibadan.
