Ogun, Lagos cart away basketball gold

Ogun State female basketball team was the better between it and Lagos State in the finals of the basketball event of the 15th National Sports Festival played this evening at the Alake Sports Center, Ijeja.

The Team Ogun ladies showed they meant business from the blast of the referees' whistle as to they mount ceaseless pressure on the Lagos ladies to prove that they are the better of the two side.

The state head coach, Alabi Adelanwa who had stated days before the final showdown that the team would win the female basketball gold as a thank you offer to the state governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniels was on hand to give the team the needed pep talk to ginger them to victory.

The Ogun team that parades the likes of Oluchi Nzekwe, Peace Aliu, Julie Onyelugo, Atinuke Akomolafe were a torn in the flesh of the Lagos counterpart who missed the opportunity to regain the sports festival gold it lost two years ago to Delta State in Abuja thus settling for the silver once again.

Backed by it vociferous supporters, the Ogun team won the final duel by 28 points margin of 74-46 points.

The male final between eventua winner, Lagos State and Bayelsa was a class game to behold as both side thrilled the large crowd that trooped out to catch a glimpse of the best of youthful basketball action.

On parade on the night were some of the nation's best U-20 players who showed a lot of gut that they have what it takes to play in the big league.

The Thomas Azuoma led Bayelsan team's initial gut paid off as they took an early lead in the first quarter which ended 17-11 only to surrender to Lagos in the second quarter 23-13 for a 34-30 points half-time scoreline.

The third and fourth quarters prodused one of the best game ever witnessed in the entire duration the basketball event of the festival lasted with Lagos winning on both ocassion though with a narrow margin (25-21; 26-21) for a cummulative scores of 85-72 points.
