Lagos, Bayelsa in final showdown

Lagos State male and female team are through to the final of the basketball event of the 15th Natioanl Sports Festival tagged "Gateway Games 2006" after seeing off Delta and Bauchi States.

The Lagos male team were ten points better than Delta State in the first semi-finals of the male category with a 73-63 points win over the Deltan who will now fight for the bronze medal slot, while the Lagos female team saw off Bauchi State team with a 47-24 points win.

In the other male semi-finals enterprising Bayelsa State boys played the game of their lives against festival defending champion, Federal Capital Territory, FCT, in an encounter which kept fans at the edge of their seats through the forty minutes the game lasted.

The Thomas Azuoma inspired side trailed the former champion in the first two quarters, 17-16 points and 21-18 points for a 38-34 points first half. The third quarter saw the never say die Bayelsa boys coming out strongly to end the quarter 23-22 points.

The fourth and last quarter produced the best of the best from the Bayelsa side who ran ring round their foe thus ending the quarter 16-08 points for a cummulative scoreline of 73-68 points to set up a second meeting between them and Lagos State whom they had earlier rattled in the course of making it to the semi-finals.

The second female semi-finals between host 'Team Ogun' and defending champion, Delta State produce one of best game ever seen in the female games so far. At the end of hostility, Ogun ran away with a 54-48 points victory for a final duel against Lagos next Monday.

The third place matches between the semi-finals losers hold Sunday as Delta is set not to end the festival without a medal to show for their efforts.
