Nigerian youths vie for honours in Cairo
The coach of the country's junior tennis team Mr. Musa Ubale has promised that the team would come back victorious as they departed the
country last Thursday for the ITF Tennis junior championship holding in Cairo, Egypt between March 30 and April 17.
The tournament accoring to the organisers, ITF will be in two legs. The players representing Nigeria at the International Tennis Federation's meet are Henry Atshaye who is enjoying a good position in the ITF junior ranking, Sunday Emmanuel who missied a slot at the junior Wimbledon tennis by whiskers, Samuel Omole Under 14 and the only female player,Blessing Samuel. Speaking on the team's chances, coach of the team, Ubale, said the players would rely on the experiences they acquired in some major meets attended late last year to make hay at the championship in Cairo. "We hope to give a good account of ourselves in this championship, Ashaye and Emmanuel have already established themselves in the ITF juinor circiut and there will be no looking back," he boasted. Ubale said the tournaments would be played on the clay court and that that would not pose any probelm since the players had their training exercise before jetting out of the country at the Kaduna Clay courts. Also speaking on the chances of the players, the Secretary of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Mr. Opeyemi Aminu, said he was confident that the players would do the country proud at the competition. "We have encouraging them and hope by the grace of God the players will come back home with laurels," he explained. Opeyemi expressed hope that the coach who is tested in the field would guide the players to victory in the two week competition. He added that with Emmanuel' s performance in a tournament in South Africa Last January sky would be the limit in Cairo. 0
