In the draws for the 2006 Nigerian Premier League, 2005 champions, Enyimba FC of Aba have been drawn in group B against arch-rivals, Heartland (Iwuanyanwu Nationale) Fc of Owerri. The draws made in Abuja on Wednesday night also had clubs like, Sharks FC, Shooting stars, Ocean boys, Lobi stars, Kaduna United, Nasarawa United, Niger Tornadoes and Gombe United in Group B. Group A has 2004 Champions, Dolphins Fc, doing battle with the likes of Rangers International of Enugu, Bayelsa United, Ranchers Bees, Kwara United, Julius Berger, Wikki Tourists, Elkanemi, Bendel Insurance and Kano Pillars. Top two clubs in each group will play a Super League on neutral venue to determine the winner of the 2006 Nigerian Premier League.

No world-class League is grouped in this manner which NFL has just done.

This format will not produce a true league winner. Only the top two teams will take part in the super league. What if the team that finishes third in Group A happens to be actually far better than the first team in group B or vice-versa? A wrong team could end up representing Nigeria in CAF competitions!

Their argument is that they want to harmonise NIgerian League with that of Europe to stop exodus of Nigerian players while the league is on. We tried this a few years ago and it didn't work. For example we had the 2002/2003, 2003/2004 seasons similar to what they have in Europe butlack of consistency ensured that we lost track of Europe.

Even harmonising our league dates with Europe on its own will not stop exodus of our players to foreign leagues while the Nigerian league is on. For example: With an important champions league match to play this weekend, Rangers lost two of their key players last week; the boys just left camp without permission! The European leagues are still on, so it's clear that harmonising Nigerian league dates with Europe won't stop the mass exodus.

NFL should have looked for another way to harmonise Nigerian league dates with other leagues around the world rather than grouping the league in this strange way.
