England beat Nigeria, as Austarlia pick gold

The hope of Nigeria winning a medal at the basketball event of the 18th Commonwealth Games holding in Melbourne, Australia was again dashed by England.

The John Amaechi captain English side whose women team also beat their Nigeria counterpart to the bronze medal Thursday posted a 80-57 points win over the Abdulrahman Mohammed captain Nigeria men team to pick the Games bronze medal.

The Nigeria who finished the first quarter 15 points same with the English team lost steam in second quarter going down 30-12 points, went further down in the third quarter 22-15 points to give the English side a 67-42 points lead.

All effort by the Nigerian to fight back in the last quarter failed to yield the desire result, though the Fiba World Championship qualifiers was able to take the fourth quarter 15-13 points it was too late to upturn the results.

Host Australia defeats challenger New Zealand 81-76 points to pick the gold medal of the basketball event making it double for the host after its women beat the same New Zealand to the medal Thursday.

The Australian took the first quarter 25-15 but went down to the more determined New Zealand team 22-11 in the second quarter.

Determination saw both side tying the third quarter 25 points apiece while the winner came back strongly in the last quarter to win the game 20-14 points.
