C/Games: Nigeria Off to a good start

Nigeria men and women basketball team today in melbourne began their quest for a place in the medla range of the basketball event of the 18th commonwealth Games with a win over India and Malaysia.

The Abdulrahman Mohammed captained Nigeria men team defeated the Indian by 113-84 points of 22-21, 27-24, 31-24 and 33-15 points.

Home boy, Ejike Ugboaja lead the team in scoring with 24 points grabbing 16 solid rebounds, Korea based Gabe Muoneke contributed 23 points and 7 rebouns, skipper Abdulrahman Mohammed scored 21 points with 2 rebounds while another home boy Abubakar Usman scored 15 points and 7 rebounds.

The women team coached by Scott Nnaji and Adewumi Aderemi had the upper hand against Malaysia with a 97-67 points victory of 17-18, 27-21, 24-15 and 29-13 points.

Mobolaji Akiode led on the scorers chart for the Nigerian ladies with 19 points 6 rebounds, Rashidat Sodiq followed with 17 points and 6 rebounds Funmilayo Ojelabi-Ogunleye scored 16 points and 6 rebounds, Ezinne james scored 14 points, 8 rebounds, captain of the side Mercy Okories and Chioma Udeaja got a double-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds and 15 points and 17 solid rebounds.

Nigeria next opponents are the Australian men team and Malta for the women on Sunday.
