Nigeria to host World chess in August
Nigeria is to host the 9th edition of the World University International Chess Championship slated for August 27th to September 3rd at the Eko Hotel, Lagos.

The leader of the group, Professor Walter Decleir said he was impressed that for the first time, an African country had accepted to host the championship at a short notice. He hoped more African countries would emulate Nigeria adding that the country was conducive to host it in spite of the wrong notion they gave them about the country. "We were made to believe that the political situation was not conducive to host the championship, but this was not so," he explained. Decleir disclosed that eight countries namely, China, Ghana, Russia, Mongolia, Turkey, South Africa and Tunisia and host Nigeria would feature. He gave the venue of the championship which is Eko Hotel a pass mark and said the participating countries would be looking forward to the championship. Also speaking on the championship, Nigeria University Games' President, Alhaji Ishyaku Ibrahim, who received the delegates told our correspondent that the FISU delegates were presented to the Sports Minister, Dr. Samaila Sambawa in his office He explained that its federation was poised to host the game and solicited for support from the Sports Ministry and corporate organizations. "We have personally committed our resourses to the hosting of the delegates and hoped the Sports Ministry will come to our aids," he said Alhaji Ibrahim pointed out that the players would make use of electronic chess boards during the championship adding that this would further exposed our players to the modern tool of the sport. 0
