WAUG-TATT - Uni-Ghana wins first medal
Emmanuel Asante of the University of Legon, Ghana, Tuesday was the envy of most athletes at the 1st West African Universities Games Tennis, Athletics and Table Tennis championship (WAUG-TATT) when he mounted the podium to receive the first gold medal of the competition holding at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) sports centre.
Asante, a shot put thrower, was simply marvelous as he threw a distance of 16.18 metres to beat the field of nine competitors. Osi Dennis of Ebonyi State University came a distant second with a throw of 14.40 metres, while Olatunji Wale of Ladoke Akintola University, Ogbomosho, got the bronze with a distance of 12.68m. Asante, who says he wants to be the best athlete of the competition by winning three more medals, said that he was poised to add the javelin and discuss gold medals to his collection before going back to Ghana. "We are here to show that we have what it takes to be the best school in West Africa. Our tennis players are doing well. The runners have qualified for the second round, and on my own I am ready to win all my events to help our collective objective of emerging champions here,'' he said. Odulesi Ayo of University of Ado Ekiti won the second gold medal of the competition when he finished first in the 800 metres men. He returned a time of 10.83 seconds to beat Raji Tunde of University of Ilorin and Emmanuel Oghala of Bayero University, Kano, to the second and third positions respectively. Jimoh Muideen of the University of Lagos won the host schools first gold medal when he beat all comers in the 400 metres final. He clocked a time of 52.46 secs to beat Ogedengbe Oluwatosin of Ambrose Ali University (55.46secs) and Chimekweme P of University of Benin to the second and third positions respectively. UNILAG, Ghana in early lead The University of Lagos gave vent to their promise to dominate the maiden edition of the West African University Games as the hosts picked two gold medals to top the medals’ table on Tuesday. Hurdler Jimoh Muideen of UNILAG won the gold in the men’s 400m hurdles event, running 52.46 secs. Ogedengbe Oluwatosin of the Ambrose Alli University picked the silver medal while Patrick Chimekwene of the University of Benin won the bronze medal. In the women’s 800m, an event that attracted only seven runners, UNILAG’s Bunmi Odejobi outran the packed field in a time of 2:10.69 secs to grab the gold. Fadare Olufunke of the Obafemi Awolowo University and Ngozi Ihekandu of the University of Nigeria picked the silver and the bronze medals respectively. In the men’s shot put however, University of Ghana’s Emmanuel Asante broke UNILAG’s early rush, heaving a distance of 16.18m to pick the gold medal while Osi Dennis of the Ebonyi State University won the silver with a throw of 14.40m. Wale Olatunji of the Ladoke Akintola University threw a distance of 12.68m to bag the bronze medal. Meanwhile, the ambition of the former Captain of the Ghanaian Under-21 team, Geoffrey Narh, to lay claim to the men’s singles title of the table tennis event, crashed on Tuesday as he lost his second match in Group D.
