Glo/CAF Awards: And the winner is Eto'O

Cameroon and Barcelona of Spain inspirational forward Samuel Eto’O Fils for the third time in a row emerged as Africa best beating Ivories forward Didier Drogba and Ghana’s defensive midfielder Michael Essien to the Africa Footballer of the Year Awards.

The annual award gala sponsored by Nigeria telecommunications giant, Globacom Nigeria Limited was a delight to behold as Nigeria’s President Chief Olusegun Obasanjo won the Glo/CAF Platinum Awards.

Eto’O pulled a total of 108 points to narrowly edged Drogba who got 106 points to emerge second while Essien was third with 50 points.

Nigeria and Africa emerging force John Mikel Obi who shot to lime light at the 2005 FIFA World youth championship held in Holland won the Young Player Award with 29 points his compatriot Taye Taiwo came second with 28 points while Farag Ahmed of Egypt placed third with 12 points.

Super Falcons Perpetua Nkwocha for the second year running won the Best Female Players of the Year Awards with 29 points Ghana’s Bayor Adjoa was second with 20 points and Vera Okolo placed third with 15 points.

In the coach of the year category Nigerian-born former Togolese national team coach Stephen Okechukwu Keshi beat the duo of Jose Manuel of Al-Ahly football club of Egypt and Mohammed Fahkir to the second and third place with 40, 25 and 11 points respectively.

Mohammed Barakat of Al-Ahly football and the Egyptian national team won the Inter-Club Player of the Year Award, Algerian midfield maestro legendary Rabah Majar was adjudged the Legend Player of the Year 2005, the Elephant of Cote d’Ivoire as the Ivories national team is known won the team of the year award, Al-Ahly Club of the Year and the Lion of Cameroon won the Fair Play Award of the Year.

A well deserved award for Eto'o this time around. However, the best goal keeper i would have prefered Enyeama of Nigeria.
