NTF to embark on aggressive marketing
The Secretary of the Nigeria Tennis Federation, Mr Opeyemi Aminu, has dsclosed that the body would embark on an aggresive drive for sponsorship in the new year. Opeyemi revealed this while counting on the successes recorded by the federation at the last International Tennis Federation junior circuit in which the country excelled.
"One of the resolutions the board decided at our meeting after the ITF meet in Lagos is to source for more sponsorship as way of reawakening the sport," he added. He said the federation has sent out letters of appeal to corporate bodies and individuals to assist in bringing back the lost glamour of the sport. "We know the economic situation is not that conducive but we shall not relent in our efforts to get more sponsors," he said. The NTF scribe explained that the programme of activities would begin on the local front with Maritime National Open tennis Championship billed for Enugu from February 6 to 11. He said the Maritime torney would be followed immediately by Ogbe Hard Court ITF Futures 1 and 11 to sponsored by Guninness from February 20 to March 4 in Benin City. Opeyemi added that the players would no doubt be kept busy throughout the year with at least a tournament in a month with additional championships such as Dala Hard Court, Governor's Cup, Dr. Olusola Saraki Cup, Heineken 3 and 4 futures, Central Bank Open, Ondo State Governor's Cup and Ekiti Governor's national tennis open. Opeyemi further said that the unimpressive performance of the players in international tournaments in recent years was as a result of lack of adequate tournaments to keep them busy. He aslo mentioned that the federataion would strive to improve on its current position in the Davis Cup competition slated for July.
