Hockey names committees, members
The Nigeria Hockey Federation, NHF board, at it's meeting in Abuja, has approved the formation of four standing committees which consist of the Technical, Developmental, Marketing and Finance, and Information and Publicity Committees.
The board- meeting, which was chaired by president of the federation and Yobe State Executive Governor, Alhaji Abba Bukar Ibrahim, also named chairmen and members into all committees to facilitate an easy articulation of policies, implementation of programmmes and administration by the secretariat. A release in Lagos signed jointly by NHF president and secretary general showed that, the technical committee with Mr. Tunde Popoola as chairman, has as members, Engineer Folarin Jayeola, who is first the vice president of the federation, Barrister Walter Imoedemhe, Mr. Muktar Adamu, Colonel Bindawa, and Enginr Simon Nkom among others. The Marketing/ Finance Committee has Alhaji Suleiman Yahaya as chairman while members are Engr Folarin Jaiyeola, Simon Nkom, Hon. Bappa Akieu and Mr. Tolu Ojo. Barrister Walter Imoedemhe heads the Developmental Committee with members as Dr. C,. O. Fasan, Mr. Eddie Akalonu and all the zonal representatives on the board. The Information and Publicity Committee has Mr Eddie Akalonu as chairman with Mr. Muktar Adamu and Mr. Dapo Sotuminu as members. Due to logistics reasons, the board decided against holding two key ebvents in calendar of the federation for the last quarter of this year. The championships, namely the Hockey Super League and National Under- 18 Boys and Girls Championships were now approved to take place in the first quarter of 2006. The Super League was shifted because dates in November/ December when it was earlier fixed to hold, came close to the qualifiers for team sports for the 14th National Sporta Festival, Gateway Games 2006 in the six geo- political sports zones. States had complained about inability to muster enough funds and send teams to Abuja for the League, after participating in the zonal quarlifiers. "The National U-18 Championships to be sponsored by Senator Usman Al Bashir on the other hand, was postponed to hold by the first quarter of this year, possibly in February, to enable the Government of Yobe State finish construction work on the Astro Turf in Damaturu where it is to be staged," the statement said. " If the Astro Turf being constructed by the Yobe State Government is completed hopefully by early 2006, it would bring to two, the number of such facilities in the country. That is Abuja and Damaturu. Modern day hockey all over the world is now played only on the Astro Turf. The federation, which has earlier taken a decision that all national championships must follow this trend, took another critical look on this in order to meet developmental programmes. "The meeting has therefore approved the use of grass pitches all over the country in the absence of astro-tuff for developmental programmes," the statement added. 0
