Real Madrid's record goal scorer Alfredo Di Stefano was recovering well in a Spanish hospital on Thursday after undergoing quadruple heart bypass surgery. A statement from Valencia's La Fe hospital said the 79-year-old Argentine was talking and had begun to take food a day after undergoing the five-hour operation.

According to reports reaching nigeriasports.com via Reuters, Di Stefano was "progressing favourably" and a ventilator had been removed. Di Stefano was admitted to hospital after a heart attack on Saturday. The hospital's chief heart surgeon, Anastasio Montero, said on Monday the operation would be complex because of the patient's age and because he is diabetic.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in the history of the game, Di Stefano led Real Madrid to five consecutive European Cup triumphs between

1956 and 1960 and was named European Footballer of the Year in 1957 and 1959. Born of Italian parents in Buenos Aires, Di Stefano played for Argentina and Spain during his 22-year career, retiring aged 40 in 1967.
