19th Fiba AWC: How Senegal Stops Nigeria
The second group-A game between Nigeria and her West Africa Neighbour and nine-time winner of the prestigious Africa Cup of Nations for Women now known as Fiba Africa Women Championship, Senegal on Thursday started on a more cautious note with both side sizing up each another with first quarter proceeding ending 9-8 points in favour of Nigeria.
The second quarter was more like the first with the Senegalese being more adventurous cutting off Nigeria captain and forward Mfon Udoka completely with a triple teaming formation adopted by the Senegal bench against the 8th All Africa Games gold medallist which limits her to just passing the ball without finding the basket in the first twenty minutes of the explosive encounter, though the quarter ended 13-11 points to bring half-time score to 22-19 with Nigeria having the upper hand. The Senegalese were not deterred as they continue to mount more pressure on the defending champion which paid off a little with the quarter ending in their favour of 19-18 and were able to even score with a 16-14 points score-line in the fourth quarter to bring full-time score to 54 points apiece thus paving the way for a five minutes over-time. And it was in this period that the business like approach of the Senegalese team who were determined to make it to the semi-final as group-A leader so as to avoid hard playing Congo DRC who is likely to emerge group-B leader scoring a massive 11 points to Nigeria one for a cumulative score of 65-55 points. 0
