Coscharis Opens Test For Commonwealth Table Tennis
Preparations for Nigerian table tennis players to the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games will take on stronger form as the 2005 edition of the annual Cosharis National Table Tennis Championship serves off in Lagos on Monday, December 12.
Officials of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation informed Nigeriasports.com that, all top national players currently in camp in Ibadan will be led back to Lagos by national team coach, Tunde Obisanya to defend their invitation and make further case for selection to the Commonwealth Games. The event, the officials said is also designed to serve as a tune up for the team. Besides serving as a platform to further test players for the Melbourne Games, the Coscharis championship billed to run from December 12 to December 14 in the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos offers attractive cash prizes for participants. According to federation officials N100,000 is on offer for the winner in the male category while their female counterparts will take home N75,000. Similarly, the first male runner up will receive N50,000 while the female runner up will be entitled to N40,000. Semi-final losers are also not left out in the flow as N40,000 has been budgeted for each of the two third place males while the women will receive N30,000 each. Followers of Nigerian tabkle tennis believe that, the sport holds sure medals hope for Team Nigeria to Australia. Many of them say the championship has come at a most auspicious time as it will not only help preparations towards the Games, but will also provide an opportunity for players not invited to the national camp to challenge and,or dethrone current champions and possibly enjoy a look in from Coach Obisanya. .FRED EDOREH 0
