Kids get judo safety drills

After a day of getting intorduced to the sport, kids atttending the Holiday Judo Coaching Clinic were yesterday, September 6, 2005, taken through safety drills by the national jcoach, Edokpolor Ihaza. Explaining why it was necessary to take the children through the drills, the coach stated that "safety was the hallmark and therefore, a very important aspect of the martial arts.

"We are doing this because of the delicate nature of judo; that explains why it has to be introduced to the kids at their tender age.  He stressed that "once safety was mastered, all other aspect of the sport woud be mastered easily.  Unlike the first day of the programme, where the number of attendance was not quite high, Tuesday's session, where the 13-year-olds captured the euphoric mood of their mates, was very encouraging."

The coach expressed satisfaction with the attendance and said that he was more impressed with their responses to the drills.  Ihaza, assisted by a crop of seasoned coaches, informed that in subsequent days of the clinic, more attention would be devoted to safety "because it is an important aspect of the sport, and as such should not be taught in a hurry.

He hailed the Nigeria Judo Federation for taking such initiative, which he was capable of lifting the sport in the country to higher heights in the world.  "I am sure that in a few years, sonme of these children would be world-beaters because they are starting the sport at a very tender age, which is the right time to start," he previewed.

Meanwhile, the Media Co-Ordinator of the Federation, Mr. Ikpo Igbinoba has spoken of plans to lhave a grand closing ceremony.  "Dignataries from the corporate world and the diplomatic corps will grace the closing ceremony which will feature demonstrations from the kids.  Saturday will be a truly grand occasion and the kids will really enjoy a lot of goodies," Igbinoba promised.
