Enyimba hot on Rangers' heels
Enyimba FC of Aba last night (September 4, 2005) at home, scandalized visiting Nasarawa FC of Lafia 4-1 to choke-up the yawning gap between the Nigerian Premier League Table leaders, Rangers FC of Enugu and them. The Aba Peoples' Elephants' merciless bashing of their visitors, though still leaves them second to the Enugu side, yet has moved them from 42 points to 47 - four-points away from Enugu Rangers, who have 49 points.
The Aba darling team opened up scoring in the 2nd minute through Musa Aliu; a signal which sent chills down the spines of their visitors from far up north, Lafia. This signal had hardly been decoded by Nasarawa bench, when the Elephants struck again in the 14th minute. Bent on using the encounter as one of their tone-up matches preparatory to their next CAF Champions League engagement, Eyimba's Prince Olomu was on song in the 47th minute again, to zip-up proceedings in the first stanza of the match, at 3-0. Soon on resumption, the Peoples' Elephant renewed their swoops on the defence of the Lafia boys, who are tutored by ex-international, Ben Duamlong...so ruffled were the visitors that, they had to yield to the insurmountable pressure from their hosts and in the process, scored an own goal for Enyimba's 4th and last goal of the encounter. However, Nasarawa remained undaunted even in the face of the humiliating 4- goal lead by Enyimba; a position which earned them a consolatory goal in the 64th minute. For Coach Duamlong, "it was an unfortunate thing, because my boys played all they could. In the game of football, you should be able to stomach and live with such humiliating defeats once in a while." Meanwhile from Port Harcourt, came in this report from our Coresspondent, CHIGOZIE CHUKWULETTA, that, Dolphins FC of Port Harcourt defeated visiting Gabros United FC of Nnewi 2-1 after the vistors had earlier shot into the lead.
