King Olukoya demands better deal

Ridge Koripamo
Nigeria's Golf Cup defending champion, Oluremi Olukoya has made a passionate call on organizers of 2005 edition of the Nigeria Cup, to go into a sort of dress rehaearsals over the quality of prizes. The call became necessary, nigeriasports.com gathered, following the champion's observed hiccups in the event's prizes last year.

Though impressed with the organizational aspects of the event last year, the country's representative at the last Worrld Corportate Golf Challenge (WCGC) hosted by Spain in their La Manga city, felt bile-bitter over the quality of prizes and its presentation.  "Nigeria Cup was the main tournament but the prizes in the tournament, did not represent the level of the event...there is the need

"I noticed that the prizes for Nigeria Cup which was the main tournament were grossly inadequate. The main tournament is the main tournament, therefore everybody that takes part and excels should be adequately rewarded", he reasoned.

Continuing, he said: "Winners of the other tournaments that were within the Nigeria Cup got their prizes, but the raffle ticket that I won is still yet to be given to me. It was a first class EAS (airlines) ticket to Abuja. Apart from myself, I know of other people that didn't get their prizes up till this moment.

"I don't quite want to sound as if I don't appreciate things but I was not particularly happy with the prize I got. You say I should go and stay in the Sheraton Hotel Summer bay, but no logistics was planned for, neither did I know what it entails. At the end of the day what I spent going to the Summer Bay, I would have spent going to Europe myself. So to avert such lapses, appropriate planning should be done as early as possible".

On what effort he has made to claim the raffle ticket after the event which took place about a year ago, he stated: "I've raised this issue several times and I've been told that they (organisers) will get back to me, but they have not done so. As far as I'm concerned, I've written it off, but if they feel that they will like to redeem their image, I'll be very keen about receiving it".

Nigeria Cup, now in its ninth edition is a ceremonial tournament staged to celebrate Nigeria's independence anniversary.  Its maiden edition which came up in 1997 was won by a Briton Mr. R.A. Jones, while a Nigeria's flagbearer to the last WCGC, Joseph Abu, won the second.
