D'Tigers roar past Ivory Coast 87-56

The battle for who qualifies for the Japan 2006 FIBA World Championship began today in Algier, Algeria with the Nigeria senior national team, D'Tigers gaining the better of West Africa neighbour Ivory Cost in the secon goup-A game.

The Tunji Awojobi captained side did not leave any one in doubt as to their readiness to carry the day after gotten off to a slow start ending the first quarter 13-11, the Coach sam Vincent tutored side did not look back afterward as they ended the ambition of the Ivories who were aiming for an upset, winning be 29 points margin of 87-56 points.

In the opening match defending African champion Angola playing in goup-B trashed South Africa 107 – 42 to send warning signal to other title contender including Nigeria.
 
The championship will be played form 15th August to 24th August and features in Group A the teams from Algeria, Gabon, Mali, Nigeria,
Ivory Coast, and Tunisia.

In Group B the teams from Angola, Central African Republic, Morocco, Mozambique, Senegal, and South Africa will play to reach the top four positions, which will qualify for the Quarter Finals.

The first three place finisher goes through to the world championship billed for 2006 in Japan.

Morocco – Senegal 60 – 70


Mali – Tunisia 61 – 80


Mozambique – Central African Republic 50 - 65
