Bumper days ahead for pro-wrestlers

Professional wrestling, like boxing is not enjoying the best of tides in Nigeria at the moment. This trend however, may soon be a thing of the past, if plans being sketched by wrestling faithful and Promoter, Chief Syst Ijeoma come out fine.

Ijeoma, who was in the thick of the mat games’ up-lift and promotions, brought in the likes of Biallo The Giant, Ray Apollon  (Jnr), Dino Rossetti, Cowboy Bob Orton, Mr Haiti, Nigeria’s Great Power Uti and a host of other world-rated wrestlers in the 1990s.

Speaking with nigeriasports.com in our Lagos office at the National Stadium, Surulere, the Promoter promised to bring back the old flame in the game and “let it take its pride of place in the schemes of sports entertainment in Nigeria; as it were in the world over.”

“Tema International Promotions have already begun works and negotiations aimed at bringing some top American wrestlers, who are capable of fanning more interest in professional wrestling.

“You remember I promoted the first ever ‘Cage Fight’ in Nigeria, and I also brought in ‘Wrestlemania’.  I am not happy with the level and promotion of the game in the country at the moment. 

“That is why I have decided to make a full come-back.  I am not coming back necessarily to make profits, but to give the game a new lease of life.” Ijeoma told us.  According to him, his focus is to bring in today’s headline makers in the world of wrestling to Nigeria.

“Such stars as; The Undertaker, Triple H, John Cina and a host of other top-rated fighters, are those we are trying to contact and contract to come and fight in the country.  We are convinced that such shows would attract not only more interest in the game, but also lead to more development.”
