Dele Aiyenugba lived under the shadows of Vincent Enyeama at least three seasons before finally grabbing the side’s number one shirt and captain’s band with the exit of Vincent, now with Iwuanyanwu NAtionale. Dele talks with nigeriasports.com on where his sights are, at least for 2005.
NS: Enyimba are in good position at the top of the table and on course for a fourth league title in five years
Dele Aiyenugba: I thank God because he is the one that gives victory
Ns: On a personal level you went ten games without conceding a goal, surely a Nigerian record
Da: I feel great but my defenders were always there for me. Infact the whole team worked had to ensure I got into the record books so it’s a credit I cant enjoy alone. We still have a long way to go and great matches to play and all I can say is that Enyimba are unstoppable.
Ns: So your defenders really put you in the spotlight?
Da: Yes. And they have done their best. Without them I couldn’t have done this magic.
Ns: throughout last season and even beyond, you understudied Vincent. Now he has left Enyimba, will you say this is your time to shine?
Da: I’ve always said that I’ll wait for my time and I thank God for giving this chance to me that I have grabbed with both hands. I will not let this opportunity slip. An old saying goes that to get to the top is easy but to maintain top position is difficult so I have to keep working hard.
Ns: you for long clamoured for a national team call up. Though the unity cup was eventually cancelled, you think your invitation came at the right time?
Da: I thank the Super Eagles Coach for inviting me because it is not easy to get called up by the national team. Too bad the cup was cancelled. But if I get any other invitation I will do my best knowing that Vincent is Nigeria’s number one and there is nothing any of us can do about it so I will be going to fight for the number two shirt and wait for my time.
